Contributing to sustainable development is integral to the way we do business and influences our choice of products and portfolio. As we work to help meet the world’s growing energy needs, we aim to bring benefits to local communities and reduce the impact of our operations. Our core values of honesty, integrity and respect for people have been laid out in the Shell General Business Principles for over 30 years.

Updates to socially responsible investors
Shell management has been meeting with socially responsible investors around the world for many years to discuss our approach and performance. You can find updates and key presentations of recent years below.
Our performance data
Tracking our performance against a range of environmental and social indicators helps us to focus our efforts to improve into the future. We participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project and are included in the FTSE4Good Index.
Sustainability Report
We report on our environmental and social performance in an honest and transparent way, including the annual publication of the Shell Sustainability Report and Review.
Standards and requirements
We have clear requirements for safety, environmental and social performance, based on our Business Principles and Code of Conduct. This includes a set of standards and manuals covering requirements for road and process safety, biodiversity, managing greenhouse gas emissions, and respecting the human rights of our neighbours as we work to provide security.
External voluntary initiatives
In addition to our own Shell Business Principles, our reporting is guided by the major external voluntary codes and principles that Shell supports.
Working safely
We aim to have zero fatalities and to prevent accidents that put our people, neighbours and facilities at risk.
Responding to climate change
We were one of the first energy companies to acknowledge the threat of climate change, to call for action by governments, our industry and energy users, and to take action ourselves.
Biofuels
Already one of the world’s largest distributors of biofuels, we are working to help develop better biofuels for the future.
