“In the early part of my career, I worked in an oil refinery and spent several years using mathematical models to optimise the commercial operations at the refinery. Relative to hard core engineering, it was exciting to see my ideas implemented on the same day. However, the spot crude and products’ markets had a real time dynamic to them and so the financial results weren’t always what we were expecting.
I applied for a role in Trading because I wanted to see how the transactional side of the business fitted together with the manufacturing part of it and how value could be created as a result. At the age of 36, I joined Products Trading and my background in refining and Economics and Scheduling made a big difference with the transition into Trading.
Nowadays, I am based in Singapore, and I am looking after Trade and Optimisation of LNG for Shell Trading. I lead a diverse team in terms of nationality, native language, gender and age. Flexibility and being ready to understand one another helps us be more responsive – which is very important. In SILS, we have a key role to play in financing future investment in LNG facilities.
As construction costs continue to escalate, we have to find new and better ways to add value. We challenge the status quo. Oftentimes, it’s not only about the market and numbers, there’s also room for negotiation and diplomacy - especially when there are agreements to be reached with other counterparties and state-owned asset holders. It’s surprising what gets achieved with the right conversation at the right place and the right time.
Trading is about delivering value. In a big group like Shell, there are many checks and balances that may give the feeling of inertia. However in Trading, responsibility is delegated and individuals are empowered to trade and to deliver value. In this regard, it is an exhilarating work environment.
Being adaptable to changing environments is key and the same is true of our careers. Sometimes we may think that moving into management is the primary career path – and the only road to financial rewards. Actually, some of us may be better suited to a specialist role. Both paths are valid and well rewarded– and they are both needed to support and enable the business.”
