Career Journey
Name: Dvyratn
Job Title: Junior Trader, Oil Trading
Location: London
Time at Shell: Three years
Degree: Electrical Engineering (BEng) and Finance (MSc)
Straight after my master’s degree, I started working for Shell Trading in oil operations. From there I have gone on to different roles in trading physical and derivatives of gasoline and ethanol in the Northwest European region.
My interest in the commodities sector originated when I was studying for my Masters in Finance, where I picked up a module in international finance and macroeconomics. Further to this I started to research different products within the commodities spectrum from pork bellies to cotton however felt oil appealed the most to me.
At the time of my application I felt that understanding oil as a commodity from the grassroots would give me a much better fundamental understanding of key drivers in the market. This led me to apply to Shell – with a large presence in both upstream and downstream business sectors.
Shell also encourages and supports personal development; there is access to buddy system and comprehensive number of courses upon joining to support the broad range of candidates with various experiences that join the Trading Network. Since starting at Shell I have completed courses in Oil and Shipping Operations, Oil Products and Blending, Negotiation Skills and Technical Trading Analysis.
At Shell I have the opportunity to work with intelligent people from all over the world. It’s a forward thinking environment with a unique combination of different views and approaches that make Shell Trading work the way it does. There is a real focus on end to end added value in the business encouraging a very open dialogue between regional offices and an alignment on global strategy.
Travel between different offices is encouraged with globalization being key driver of commodity price action; understanding other markets and regions is key to being able to be a more comprehensive and accomplished trader. I am hoping to further my understanding of the Asian or U.S gasoline markets.
