As part of our learning agenda, we’ve put a competence framework in place and benchmarked it with leading external CP practices. This is a vital component of a suite of tools and products called CP Functional Excellence, which allows us to map all our roles to particular competency profiles. This means we can offer clear guidance on the skills and abilities required for a particular job, and the competencies you’ll need for any role you aspire to.

We believe a career is a personal journey, and one of our key tools is our CP Job Experience Navigator. Relevant experience is just as important as technical skills or leadership ability in achieving success, and the Navigator describes key experiences that are vital to a successful and rewarding career with us.

Shell also subscribes to the Supply Chain Academy. Owned and run by Accenture, this is an innovative portal that provides a whole range of self-study, e-learning and distance learning opportunities for our CP people.

One of the key qualities we look for in our people is an external mindset – in other words an awareness of best practice throughout the industry. This is why we encourage membership of external professional bodies, provide access to a number of external programmes, and where appropriate, provide support for professional qualifications.

All this ensures you keep fully abreast of the latest developments, build skills and truly innovative thinking.

And while both virtual and workplace learning will continue to feature prominently, classroom training programmes such as Strategic Business Partner courses will provide our senior managers with opportunities for face-to-face learning and networking opportunities with colleagues from around the world.
