Shell lawyer scoops top UK ‘Women in Law’ award
Shell legal expert Anne Riley has been named ‘Energy & Infrastructure: In-house lawyer of the year’ at the 2013 Chambers UK Women in Law Awards.
Anne Riley, Head of Shell’s Antitrust Team
Anne is based in the UK as global Head of Shell’s Antitrust Team, which looks after antitrust laws (laws relating to fair competition and merger control). She was recognised for her achievements over the past 12 months, including excellence in client service and contribution to the legal profession in general.
On receiving the award, Anne said: “This award is a great honour and is not so much an award for me personally but really a reflection of the fantastic work done by Shell’s Legal Antitrust Team (LAT) – a team I’m privileged to lead – as well of course being a tribute to the work of Shell’s global Ethics and Compliance Office and Shell Legal as a whole.”
With 28 years of antitrust experience, Anne heads a global team which covers the full range of antitrust counselling, including merger control and behavioural issues. She is also Chair of the ICC UK Competition Committee and Vice Chair of the ICC International Competition Commission. Anne also chairs the ICC Task Force on Antitrust Compliance and Advocacy.
She added: “In terms of the work I do personally, apart from the huge privilege of leading the global Antitrust team, I’m also responsible for the content of Shell’s Antitrust Compliance Programme.
“I’m very active in the Competition (Antitrust) section of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which has just launched the ‘ICC Antitrust Compliance Toolkit ’.” The toolkit, which offers companies practical tips on embedding a successful compliance culture, was just one of the areas recognised by the judging panel.
World's best lawyers
Based on extensive research, Chambers’ researchers and editors identify and rank the world’s best lawyers according to the criteria most valued by clients – such as technical and business expertise, prompt delivery and value for money. Individual lawyers are then rated 1-6, with one being the highest.
The award is the latest in a long line of achievements for Anne, whose team won the International Law Office global award for best antitrust team in the world in 2008.
Her current role covers all global antitrust team activities, including the US.
