08/12/2016, Maranello, Italy: As part of the Innovation Partnership between Ferrari and Shell, five Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) teams were invited to Ferrari’s world-famous Fiorano Circuit this week to set the most fuel efficient lap of the iconic test track.
Before the results were even in, the cars had already made history by being the first purpose-built fuel-efficient vehicles in the world to drive the legendary layout since it was built in 1972, and later resurfaced using Shell Cariphalte in 2002.
The challenge was part of a wider event held for the winners of the inaugural Drivers’ World Championship (DWC), held this summer at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as part of Shell’s Make the Future Festival, a four-day festival of ideas and innovation offering curious minds of all ages a glimpse into the global energy future, featuring live science shows and amazing inventions and cars of the future.
The winning DWC team was Bumi Siliwangi Team 4 from Indonesia, which was awarded an exclusive Scuderia Ferrari experience in Maranello. The other visiting teams in attendance were HE-ARC Ingénierie from Switzerland, Politecnico Di Torino from Italy, Lycée Saint-Joseph La Joliverie from France and Hochschule Offenburg from Germany.
The introduction of the DWC comes as one of the most significant changes to SEM since it began more than 30 years ago. The competition – to find the most energy-efficient driver – saw teams from this year’s regional events in Americas, Asia and Europe going head-to-head in a traditional racing format to compete for a once-in-a-lifetime-prize at Ferrari headquarters.
“The Bumi Siliwangi students have spent a week with us working through a variety of workshops at Museo Ferrari and learning more about the way we work as a team in order to improve their vehicles ahead of the 2017 Shell Eco-marathon Drivers’ World Championship. It was great to work with such a motivated group of students who really are pushing the boundaries of efficiency, and this was made possible due to the Innovation Partnership with Shell, which sees us work more closely together than ever before both on and off the track.”
Mattia Binotto, Chief Technical Officer Scuderia Ferrari
Team Microjoule-La Joliverie from France took the honours of the most efficient lap of Fiorano using its gasoline fuelled car and was presented with a certificate by Official Scuderia Ferrari Test Driver Marc Gené. The winning result was 1,497 km/l – the same as travelling from Fiorano Circuit, Maranello to London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on a litre of fuel.
“The introduction of this year’s Drivers’ World Championship has been an important step in the evolution of Shell Eco-marathon and the global drive for energy efficiency. It brought together for the first time in the same location the world’s best UrbanConcept teams competing in an exciting race to see who is the most energy-efficient driver. Congratulations to Bumi Siliwangi Team 4 for their efforts throughout the year and we look forward to pushing the boundaries of innovation even further in 2017.”
Norman Koch, Shell Eco-Marathon General Manager
“This week with Scuderia Ferrari is something that none of us will ever forget. As aspiring engineers, the lessons learnt and advice given from some of the best engineers in the world have been a dream come true. We are only a small team from Indonesia and Shell Eco-marathon has provided us with this amazing opportunity to showcase our car and efforts on a global stage. We would like to thank Shell and Ferrari for making this possible!”
Ramdhani, Bumi Siliwangi Team 4 Driver
Indonesia’s Bumi Siliwangi Team 4 will put their learnings into practice at the upcoming Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2017. Over 150 teams are participating at SEM Asia 2017.
The eighth Shell Eco-marathon Asia will take place for the first time in Singapore at Make the Future Singapore, a four-day public event featuring bright energy ideas and solutions that address the global energy challenge – how to generate more energy, while producing less CO2. Make the Future Singapore is the inaugural Asian edition of Shell’s Make the Future Festival, and falls on March 16 – 19, 2017.
