About the registration

The registration process for Shell Eco-marathon Americas consists of four different phases:

  • Phase 1: Team interest and information
  • Phase 2: Technical information
  • Phase 3: Logistics
  • Phase 4: Off-track Awards

Registration process

Team Registration

Phase 1 Registration 

Opens: August 23, 2016

Closes: October 13, 2016

During Phase 1, teams teams are required to submit valuable information including:

  • Basic vehicle information
  • Contact details
  • Vehicle photos or drawings
  • Signed school/university waiver

The number of teams eligible to compete is limited. The organizers reserve the right to select the teams/vehicles that best adhere to the safety guidelines and offer the best driver protection.

Registration & Final selection

Phase 2 Registration

Opens: October 25, 2016

Closes: December 1,2016

Teams are required to upload the following technical schematics:

  • Fuel System
  • Electrical System
  • Shell’s technical team will review and approve or decline your technical schematics.

Before submitting your application, make sure you read the Shell Eco-marathon Global Rules - Chapter 1 carefully.


Phase 3: Logistics

Opens: December 20, 2016

Closes: March 16, 2017

  • Project, team member and participation details;
  • Lodging information;
  • Indicate if your team plans to stay in a hotel or in the free campsite inside the convention center;
  • Transportation of your vehicle: let us know if you are shipping your vehicle or driving it to the event;
  • Signed personal waivers: Minors must have the waivers signed by a parent or guardian and notarized. Upload PDF of signed waiver (available within the registration website) once complete. Non-minors can sign the waiver electronically;
  • Valid drivers’ licenses: For the drivers and reserve drivers (driver’s permits will NOT be accepted).

Drop-out Deadline: March 28, 2017

Teams must inform event organizers if their plans have changed and if they no longer plan to participate in Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2017, or they will not be allowed to participate the following year.

Off-Track Awards

Phase 4: Off-Track Awards 

Opens: December 20, 2016

Closes: April 20, 2017

Teams are encouraged to submit entries for the following Off-Track awards:

  • Communications Award
  • Vehicle Design Award
  • Technical Innovation Award
  • Safety Award

At the event, teams can also be recognised with the Perseverance & Spirit of the Event Award -- teams cannot apply, but will be nominated by organisers on-site.
