Shell Seraya scoops three achievement awards at SCIC Responsible Care awards

Shell Chemicals Seraya Pte Ltd was recognised in three categories at the Singapore Chemical Industry Council's (SCIC) Responsible Care® Awards ceremony on 27 March.

The awards acknowledge companies in Singapore that have effectively implemented the Responsible Care programme in the areas of health, safety and the environment (HSE).

At the SCIC's annual dinner and awards ceremony, Seraya received achievement awards for community awareness and emergency response code, employee health and safety code, and process safety code. Seraya manufactures styrene monomer, propylene oxide, polyether polyols and propylene glycols.

Kevin Heng, General Manager of Seraya, said: "These awards recognise the dedication and commitment of teams at Seraya to achieve robust health, safety and environmental standards and performances. Safety is the number one priority for Shell companies, aligning with chemical industry efforts to strive for excellence in HSE management through initiatives like Responsible Care."

Since signing the Responsible Care Global Charter in February 2006, Shell operations worldwide have embraced the Responsible Care principles throughout their activities to operate strict HSE guidelines - often beyond the requirements of regulations. In Singapore, the programme is guided by six codes of management practices covering: community awareness and preparedness, distribution, employee health and safety, pollution prevention, process safety, and product stewardship.

Thomas Chhoa, Shell General Manager Ethylene Oxide/Glycols, welcomed guests including Singapore Minister of State for Trade and Industry, S Iswaran to the Shell-sponsored 2008 Responsible Care Awards, now in their seventh year.

Thomas said: "We at Shell are greatly encouraged by individuals taking personal ownership of safety and responsible practices in their daily work. As a company we not only take a systematic approach to HSE management but we strive to find ways to achieve continuous improvement in all our work processes and behaviour. Our HSE Golden Rules of complying with the law, standards and procedures, intervening in unsafe or non-compliant situations, and respect for our neighbours apply also to all our contractors and joint venture partners."

With an increasing number of local companies recognised in this year's awards, Lee Tzu Yang, Chairman of Shell Singapore, added: "By their safe and responsible management of chemicals throughout their lifecycles, the winning companies continuously raise the bar on acceptable standards in health, safety and environmental performance in the chemicals industry. Their successes inspire others to follow, but more importantly, their adherence to Responsible Care principles help to ensure that the industry remains sustainable."

About Responsible Care

This is the chemical industry's global voluntary initiative under which companies, through their national associations, work together to continuously improve their HSE performance, and to communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes.

Notes to editors
Shell companies have their own separate identities but we may sometimes use "Shell", "Group, "we" or "us" when we refer to Shell companies in general or where no useful purpose is served by identifying any particular Shell company.

Shell Chemicals collectively refers to the companies of the Shell Group engaged in the chemicals business. Shell chemicals companies manufacture and deliver petrochemical building blocks and polyolefins to industrial customers. These products are widely used in plastics, coatings and detergents.
