Petrophysics is the discipline that identifies and quantifies hydrocarbon resources in the subsurface and evaluates the nature and distribution of rock properties and formation fluids over the life cycle of reservoirs. This is achieved by application and interpretation of downhole logs and laboratory core measurements of the physical rock and fluid properties in the vicinity of a wellbore. Petrophysicists ensure that these results, with uncertainties, are properly reflected in static and dynamic reservoir models. They work in integrated teams and have substantial interfaces with all other subsurface disciplines and well engineering. They provide a robust technical basis for subsurface modelling to make safe and economically justifiable decisions throughout the lifecycle of the field.

First oil at the Tension-Leg Platform of Malikai, located 100 kilometres off the coast of the Malaysian state of Sabah was achieved late 2016. Malikai is Shell’s second deep-water project in Malaysia, following Gumusut-Kakap. Malikai with a number of industry firsts exemplifies our focus on technical progress and competitive project delivery to unlock deep-water resources and meet future energy needs. Valsan Vevakanandan has been at the core of the Malikai development, he says “I felt privileged that as a young Petrophysicist I was entrusted with a flagship project of the size and complexity of Malikai. The complex nature of the highly faulted and thin-bedded reservoirs in the Malikai subsurface presents a unique learning experience that challenges the problem-solver instinct in any engineer. The learning ladder has been steep, and so is the strong disciplinary-wide integrated support system that helped me and the team to deliver First Oil”. The Gumusut-Kakap floating production system has been in operation since October 2014 and has been producing in excess of 100 mmbls of oil since then. Further infill wells are now being matured to maintain production plateau. Tay Ching Hwuang has been the lead Petrophysicist in Gumusut: “There is a lot of pride in working for a flagship asset like Gumusut-Kakap which contributes some 25% of Malaysia’s oil output. Drilling infill wells through partially depleted reservoirs presents a vast technical challenge which poses unique opportunities for a Petrophysicist to work alongside global experts from a range of disciplines to find smart solutions. The technical complexity of the project keeps me energized every day and the diverse team enriches my learning experience.”
