Scotford is a joint chemicals/refining site, called Scotford Manufacturing, with an adjoining bitumen upgrader. The Shell Manufacturing facility produces the full range of fuels for the Western Canadian market. It also manufactures styrene monomer and monoethylene glycol (MEG).

Styrene monomer is sold to customers in North America for the manufacture of a variety of commercial and consumer products such as cassette/CD cases, food containers, home insulation, safety helmets and car interiors.

Monoethylene glycol is primarily sold to customers in North America for use in making products such as polyester fibers, plastic drinking bottles, adhesives and inks.

The site is highly integrated from the bitumen upgrading units, through the oil products refining units and finally, the chemicals products units.

Adjoining industrial activities There are about 125 developed acres at the main plant site. The plant is bordered by wetlands on three sides. There are no adjoining or immediate industrial or residential neighbours. The facility also operates a deep-water dock on the Mobile River approximately 7.5 miles (12 km) from the plant. This facility includes a dock and tanks and is bordered by an industrial ship repair facility and another industrial tank farm and dock.
History
  • Since acquisition, Shell Chemical LP has conducted some debottlenecking, including the # 1 Crude Unit and the Vacuum Unit, to increase Heavy Olefin Feed production.
  • The facility was purchased by Shell on 1 August 1996.
  • The original facility was built and operated by Louisiana Land & Exploration Company, starting in 1975 with a single crude unit and reformer. Various units were added over time.

  • Shell Jurong Island is made up of several chemical manufacturing assets that produce:

    Ethylene oxide (which is converted into ethylene glycols and high purity ethylene oxide) and ethoxylates. These products are used in applications such as polyester fibres, polyester resins and surfactants.

    Styrene monomer, the starting material for plastics such as polystyrene, expandable polystyrene and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. The main applications for these products are in the automotive, electrical, appliances and packaging industries.

    Propylene oxide, which is used in a wide range of chemical derivatives including polyols, propylene glycols (namely monopropylene glycol and dipropylene glycol), glycol ether solvents and flame retardants.

  • Seraya Chemicals Singapore Pte Ltd established on 8 February 1994 as a 70:30 joint venture between Shell and Mitsubishi Chemical.

  • At the end of 2014, Shell acquired the 50 per cent shareholding of Ellba Eastern (Pte) Ltd – a joint venture between Shell and BASF which produces styrene monomer and propylene oxide. Shell is hence the full owner of Ellba, which it has been operating since the plant started up in June 2002.

The Pernis facility is part of a large industrial area which contains other petrochemical and refinery sites. Nearby communities are the villages of Pernis, Rhoon and Poortugaal and the cities of Hoogvliet (Rotterdam), Spijkenisse, Vlaardingen and Schiedam, all in a radius of 7 kilometers.

History

Chemicals production started on the Pernis site in 1949. This site, together with the nearby Moerdijk site, has since grown into one of the largest chemical complexes in the Netherlands. The latest additions are a propylene oxide glycol ether plant, on-stream in 2001, and a polymer polyols plant, on stream in mid-2003.
