Shell Celebrates World Environment Day
H.E. Dr Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, the UAE Minister of the Environment, Saeed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA and Raoul Restucci, Executive Vice President for Shell Exploration and Production International attended the awareness function at Dubai Mall to celebrate World Environment Day.
During the event, Shell Dubai staff volunteers distributed information on the Energy Challenge to members of the general public. Shell’s ‘Rough Guide to Energy and Our Planet’, which was handed out to visitors to the Shell stand, explains important energy issues such as ways of improving energy efficiency in electricity use, transport and the heating and cooling of homes and work places. The book is available in Arabic and English.
Omar Al Qurashi, Shell Communications Manager, said: “Shell supports wide-ranging action to address climate change and emphasizes how each of us has a role to play. To manage CO2 emissions in our Shell operations, we work with our partners to try to increase the efficiency of our operations and produce energy in environmentally responsibly ways”.
Shell has a number of CSR initiatives that contribute to raising environmental awareness in the UAE. In 1996, Shell launched its Shell Better Environment Awards- an educational initiative that promotes raising awareness among UAE students of health, safety and the environment, in partnership with the Ministry of Education. The Enviro-Spellathon is another initiative sponsored by Shell and run by the Environmental Education and Awareness Division of The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. Enviro-Spellathon targets students aged between 7 and 13 years and teaches children to appreciate the life forms with which they share their world. The educational initiative adopts a long-term view of sensitising the younger generation to environmental concerns through the introduction of relevant study materials to both supplement and complement school curricula in the UAE.
